Sacred Sex: The Promise of Tantra

For thousands of years, the mainstream religions have divided the world into two realities: the lowly, sinful, dirty realm of the earth, and the plane of the gods. Many of our natural tendencies, such as sex, have been relegated to the earthly plane. While the pure and holy, such as chastity, pull us toward the heavens.

When I found Tantra, I discovered a more natural and full experience of spirituality. Instead of having the duality described above, Tantra embraces our nature, and provides the tools to experience God through our most human activities, like sex. Instead of repressing our desires into the dustbin of shame, Tantra lays out a path for the enhancement of our lovemaking, rituals that provide space for ascension, and perspectives that open the doors to mystical experiences of “all there is”.

This sounds not only more enjoyable, but much more wholistic than the approach provided by the mainstream religions through the years.

The repression of our natural sexual desires can also create lots of problems. Sexual energy is our most powerful and potent energy source, and when that is suppressed, it is much like kinking a water hose. The energy builds up, then explodes in a really uncontrolled and unhealthy way. I would argue this suppressed sexual energy is responsible for many of our pedophilia, mental health, and issues with violence.

The beauty of Tantra is that it embraces this powerful sexual energy, and instead of asking you to repress and ignore it, inspires you to enhance and manage it responsibly. The benefits of this practice are enormous. First, it provides the toolkit for deep, connected, and loving relationships. Second, it has a vast positive effect on your health and vitality. Third, it provides you with a giant surplus of energy which you can then use to power all facets of your life. Fourth, and perhaps most important, it is a path to a deeper and richer spiritual presence.
